Here are some frequent lies that I hear many Network Marketers tell their Downline. These not only set false expectations among your distributors, but weaken your organization when distributors sign up under false expectations. Here are two classic lies that are found in almost any MLM organization. I will start with these two, and add more.
MYTH NUMBER ONE: THE PRODUCT SELLS ITSELF.
So many people get involved in network marketing believing that it doesn't matter how good your sales skills are you can succeed. They would have you believe that all you have to do in order to grow your business is introduce people to the product and they will all fall in love with it. This is a dangerous lie. If you're in network marketing and do not have a basic understanding of sales skills you will need to be properly trained if you hope to succeed. People may join MLM initially because of the product, but they will stay for the people. You must convince people that the product is fanatastic, but more importantly, you must convince them that thye can change their financial situations by selling the product
If the product your MLM company is selling could indeed sell itself, the company would have no need for you. They could just put a "Buy-It-Now" button on their website and people would flock to purchase it. In MLM you are the salesman, you are the person who convinces people that the product you offer, the opportunity you present, and organization that supports that opportunity is what that person needs. Many upline leaders don't teach their downline sales skills, but rather teach their downline that just giving someone the product is enough to build a successful business. In MLM it is critical that you look for a team that can teach and train you proper sales skills. The Sweet Life Team is committed to training its downline extensively in sales skills and tecniques.
MYTH 2: EVERYBODY IS A PROSPECT.
Many Leaders in MLM still teach today that in order to be successful in network marketing you have to open your mouth to every single person you meet. In Walmart you should be passing out cards to every person you pass, while on the bus you should be speaking to people about your opportunity. Many MLM leaders teach this philosphy because they don't have the ability to give you closing skills. They hope that if you talk to enough people, the law of numbers states, you'll find some people that would buy from anybody. They are teaching their downline to go after the low hanging fruit.
To be successful in MLM not everyone is YOUR prospect. You need to identify your potential distributors, leaders, and downline and focus your attention on them. The internet is a great tool now to find qualified and interested parties and let them come to you. You could stand on a street corner with a sign that says "ask me how to make 10,000 per month" and might get one or two people to stop in an 8 hour period and talk to you, or you could let hundreds of people come to you proactively on the internet asking you about your opportunity.
So many people despise MLM because they have been hit up by everyone and anyone about an opportunity. Don't beat your opportunity down everybody's throat. Learn how to identify interested parties, learn how to let them sell themselves rather than being sold, and market smart not hard.
